ChatGPT marks the first time in history where a large percentage of the population is knowingly interacting with artificial intelligence. AI has been embedded in our interactions for years, but now it is more overt, and this is already changing the ways in which we interact with technology. occam™ has taken a closer look at how Americans are responding to the moment.
ChatGPT has amassed more than 100 million subscribers since its November launch, and it has impressed them. occam™ examines initial reactions and reveals that the current norms for how we get information are being challenged and the youth (18-29 year olds) are the most attentive to this change.
occam data observed that overall familiarity with ChatGPT has soared in the last month (see figure 1). Interestingly, this jump coincides with Google announcing its own generative AI tool “Bard” and Microsoft presenting the integration of ChatGPT with search engine Bing.
Though Google has dominated the search engine market for years right up to the present, as figure 2 highlights, the disruption posed by generative AI raises serious questions. While, again, occam shows that awareness of the technology is limited, it also shows that those aware are, by and large, convinced of its impact. Figure 3, for example, reveals that 25% say that ChatGPT will replace Google searches on some level, and 12% say it will do so completely. A scary prospect for Google given it is ubiquitous with practically all internet searches today.
According to occam, only 22% of those familiar with ChatGPT do not trust AI-generated answers, and 50% believe that the technology will increase productivity at work or at school.
This does not necessarily mean the US population has an entirely rosy picture of ChatGPT/generative AI. Figure 5 points out that 70% are sure that AI will result in job loss, and while figure 6 shows that concern is spread out across the age spectrum, those most uneasy are unsurprisingly the younger population, with the 18-29 year olds at 95% concerned.
